![]() Ford MustangThe Ford Mustang is an American car based upon the Ford Falcon compact. The very first Ford Mustang production model was a convertible (in white). It was first shown to the public in 1964 at the New York Worlds Fair, and then afterwards on US television. The term "Pony Car" aroused because of a nickname many gave to the Ford Mustang. Even after all these years, the Ford Mustang is still in production, and its design has changed very little. The name “mustang” was given to it after the P-51 Mustang (a plane) of the second world war era. Even though the Ford Mustsang is a very well styled and sport based design, the Ford Mustang’s design actually relies upon very simple components – nothing special! The drive train, suspension and chassis was basically a modified version of those used in the Ford Fairlane and Ford Falcon. Both the Ford Mustang and the Ford Falcon are 4613mm in length (181.6 inches). The Mustang is just 86mm thinner than the Falcon though, at 1732mm (68.2 inches). A V8 model Ford Mustang with everything in weighs about 3000 lb (1360kg), while the six cylinder engine weighed about 2570 lb. One of the main reasons the Ford Mustang was so immensely popular was because of the amount of options a buyer had when buying it, allowed buyers to customise their new car to exactly how they wanted and needed it. This also meant increased profits for both Ford and the car dealers, as people added on extras and of course paid more for these extras. The first time that the Ford Mustang was actually a sports car (rather than just being a sporty car) was when in 1996 Carrol Shelby converted a Ford Mustang GT model into a more of a racing car, and he beat the Chevrolet Corvette in it. |
